Waste Management and Recycling Services
Dal Recycling
Fine paper, newsprint, corrugated cardboard, beverage containers and batteries are recycled on campus. Please place these items in the appropriately labeled receptacle nearest you.
We request that you flatten cardboard boxes prior to placing them out for collection.
Do not place any recyclable item in the regular garbage or in any exterior waste bin as it will end up in the landfill waste stream.
For more recycling information, check out the "Dalhousie Guide to Waste Management on Campus".
Electronics Recycling Program
Dalhousie University is pleased to announce that it is adding another recycling stream to its existing campus program. Starting October 2008 electronic products will be collected, wiped of data, and transported to an approved provincial recycling depot. Materials from the depot are transferred to a plant where metals, glass, and plastic are recycled into new products.
This program is for electronic products that have exhausted their re-use potential. If you have products that are still useful, follow the procedures outlined in the University's Disposal of Surplus Material Policy.
Dalhousie's electronic recycling program will include the following products:
Phase 1 (Oct 2008)
desktop, laptop and notebook computers
(Including CPU's, keyboards, mice, cables and other components in the computer)
computer monitors
computer printers & fax machines
televisions
Phase 2 (Feb 2009)
computer scanners
personal/portable audio/video playback and/or recording systems
home audio/video playback and/or recording systems
home theatre in a box (HTB) systems
vehicle audio and video systems
non-cellular telephones and answering machines

Organic Waste
In late 1998, the University initiated an organic waste collection program which includes food waste and non-recyclable paper products.
At present, collection sites are located outdoors adjacent to residence cafeterias and also outside the Student Union Building and the Oxford Street Warehouse. Material is also collected from the various food
services retail sites on campus, as well as a limited number of departmental lounges. The program is being expanded as resources permit. The grounds-keeping crew also diverts leaves, grass clippings and branches, etc., to a proper composting facility.
Landfill Waste
Regular waste is removed by a contractor who services 35 dumpsters throughout the campus. The dumpsters are also topped up with material collected by our groundskeeping staff from smaller exterior waste receptacles on campus.
We request that you recycle at every opportunity in order to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Please do not place cardboard or other recyclable items in exterior waste dumpsters.
Wood, metal items and renovation/construction debris must be excluded, as well.
Specialized Wastes
Special wastes, such as radioactive or bio-hazardous materials must be handled separately.
